Meet the 19 students who will make up the Class of 2018. Over the next few days, we’ll highlight three incoming students at a time. Today: Nour Malaeb, Scott Cowell, and Sejal Kotak.
Nour is a product designer. He lived in Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and Lebanon, before studying industrial design at the Savannah College of Art and Design in the United States. He worked at RKS Design in California on projects such as designing the UI and apps for Sharp’s Smart TVs, a portable computer for the blind, and exploring how mobile technology can help people deal with disaster situations. Two years ago, he moved home to Beirut to reconnect with the culture and discover the design scene.
Nour is interested in how technology amplifies different aspects of our humanity, both the good ones and the bad, and does so across languages, cultures, and generations. He is looking forward to playful experimentation and collaboration with others at SVA.
Born and raised in the Washington, DC area, Scott received his Bachelor of Architecture from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY. Over the last decade, he’s contributed to projects ranging from small portable structures to large-scale federal projects and has worked in various parts of Asia, Europe, and the United States. Scott has a particular interest in the intersection of technology and the built environment, especially in urban settings. At SVA he looks forward to collaborating with talented people to develop new and exciting ideas, concepts, and designs that will challenge the status quo of urban life in America.
Sejal loves to spend time with her fur baby Cooper and is an avid dog lover. When volunteering for an NGO, she realized that the adoption process was long and tedious. She decided to rethink the experience and was amazed to see how a small design change can result in a big difference. From that moment on, there was no looking back.
After graduating from Symbiosis Institute of Design, in Pune, India, Sejal worked with Sprinklr where she led design for various projects. Soon she was exposed to many aspects of a young, rapidly growing enterprise startup, and spent more than two years designing and understanding the amalgamation of design and code. She has also interned with Microsoft (Bing) and Fab.com, where she learned designing for consumer apps. In her free time, she likes to engage in a game of foosball, a glass of wine, and cooking.
Sejal wants to bring meaning to her work and humanness in the interactions she creates. At SVA IxD, she aims to refine her ability to communicate ideas by bringing them to life.
