Clive Thompson on Finding Genius

January 6, 2009

Last month, at the December Lecture series, “The Interviewers,” Clive Thompson spoke on how to find genius in an interview.

“If you want to learn, you can’t study the object, that will tell you nothing. What you need to find out is all the things that didn’t work.

You need to see the prototypes that are shitty that didn’t work, the horrible stuff that made no sense at all and you need it lined up chronologically, and then, you can see genius emerging.”

    1. The video you attached is very interesting. The concept of finding horrible stuff is great. All the lecture is about some common things but we all forget them when required.

        1. Not heard of Clive Thomas before, but he is a very clever guy in the way he analyses things. I have to agree about Napoleon Dynamite its like Marmite you either love it or hate it.

          1. Turns out, the real culture war in science isn’t about science at all — it’s about language. And to fight this war, we need to change the way we talk about scientific knowledge.

Found your post very knowledgeable. Your presentation with video is great. Clive explained about finding Genius in an interview. To identify someone as Genius the interviewer need to be Genius. And Dot Dot Dot lecture concept is great that every achiever will meet and share their ideas so that it is a knowledge feast for the audience.

                  1. What a great concept. If you think about it, we have all had awful ideas and then gradually refined and improved them over time. I wish that meant that I was a genius… But it does show that the process of improvement of an idea - especially big ones - is within us all and we can all somehow improve the things and work that we do.

                    1. Is gradual improvement really genius? Doesn’t that mean that we can all be a genius? That doesn’t seem right to me. Stand out intellect stands out. But gradual improvement is something that we all ought to be able to achieve. For me, I’m not yet convinced…
