Introducing Typekit

May 28, 2009

Something exciting comes this way. After much discussion on fonts, css, and the future of web design as we know it, comes Typekit. Jeffrey Veen’s Small Batch Inc. works with faculty member Jason Santa Maria to introduce a novel concept for online font distribution that is long due.

“We’ve been working with foundries to develop a consistent web-only font linking license. We’ve built a technology platform that lets us to host both free and commercial fonts in a way that is incredibly fast, smoothes out differences in how browsers handle type, and offers the level of protection that type designers need without resorting to annoying and ineffective DRM.”

  1. A true standard for font sharing is definitely long overdue. Something that is universal across browsers, operating systems, development languages, and file types will be very useful. If some sort of caching system is a part of Typekit to allow for instantaneous downloads from a hosted solution, then this is a gem. I look forward to trying it out!

              1. Fonts are what set the tone, emotion, and mood of a site. Even the fonts you guys use for your comments are rounded and softer than most.

                1. It will be good to have some standarization of fonts across the board. Getting tired of having something look great, only to find out it doesn’t work on all systems.
