Summary
Designers create interventions that impact the world. Design interventions can and do reshape markets, shift the locus of value for customers, precipitate the emergence of new industries, create new wealth, and distribute technological capability throughout society. They also consume resources, demand attention, foreclose opportunities, and destroy value. How does design produce these consequences, for better and for worse? How can designers better understand them and make more deliberate choices about the impacts of their work on markets, individuals, companies, and society? This course will investigate these questions and help students become more effective at understanding and taking the strategic decisions involved in the creation of interactive products and services.
Course Objectives
The goal of this course is to improve students’ strategic thinking skills and to enable proficiency with creating, evaluating, and making strategic choices. During the term, students will develop competency in strategic analysis, concepting, and decision-making, and gain practice in articulating strategic arguments for their work.
