This course explores the communication and narrative potential of information visualizations. Building on a foundation of core design concepts like typography, color, and composition, the class proceeds through graph and map-making best practices toward advanced topics of data structure and programmatic visualizations.
Course Objectives
To provide students with an understanding of the tools and techniques of data visualization and a framework for educated exploration and invention.
To gain experience describing and critiquing the methods and approaches of data visualization through presentations and critiques.
Requirements
This class will be largely composed of class discussions, studio exercises and critiques. Attendance and participation in all aspects of the class is mandatory. Missing more than two classes in a semester will negatively affect your participation and attendance grade.
Assignments are due at the start of class on a project’s due date unless otherwise specified. Digital files (PDF, JPG, PNG, etc) should be uploaded to the shared course folder on the server, physical projects can just be brought to class. No late assignments will be accepted, but you may submit them early.
Students should read or watch assignments before each class; reading additional material is strongly encouraged.
