GUIDELINES FOR A SUCCESSFUL INTERNSHIP
An internship should be mutually beneficial to both the intern and the employer. With foresight and planning, you can work with the strengths of the individual and the organization to make the months you work together the most effective and meaningful.
Part apprenticeship, part part-time position, it’s important to understand the motivations behind an internship.
Why do students seek an internship? There are a variety of reasons, but overall, two stand out: first, MFA Interaction Design interns want to apply what they’re learning to balance the classroom experience and gain practical work experience; second, to extend learning in a specific field, gaining insight and experience beyond that possible in the scope of a semester. Many hope to advance the relationship beyond that of the internship.
Why does an employer seek an intern? The MFA Interaction Design interns bring new methods, technologies, and approaches from the field and the classroom to the team, yet are highly adaptable and collaborative. An intern can bring support to your team in short- to medium-sized projects where it otherwise wouldn’t be wise to divert your resources. The program is a rich recruiting tool, and a cost-efficient one as well. The interns are highly career-oriented and focused make invaluable and dependable candidates for employment.
What makes a successful internship? SVA’s internship program is flexible and intended to be a framework that meets the needs of your organization. For it to be meaningful for students, the following framework should be in place:
Provide a leader. You should provide a designated creative mentor or creative director who can give counsel and professional guidance to the intern.
Make it tangible. The intern’s responsibilities should be in line with your organization’s vision, and therefore, he or she should be able to participate in a valuable and creative way toward your goals.
Set the environment. The intern should be given a hands-on learning environment where he or she can interact with staff and clients on a regular basis.
Projects The intern is coming from a high-paced environment with a high degree of professional experience already. He or she is expecting to be challenged creatively and strategically, and this opportunity provides you with the opportunity to gain a new perspective.
SVA internships for this program are not for credit, so there is no grade associated with the internship. If a student wishes to take an internship for credit, we evaluate it on a case-by-case basis.
