Instaphotobooth is a traveling photo booth that connects strangers through photography, by making their shared experience tangible.

This project explores the extent to which photography can make people feel like they are part of a collective experience. It also helps people think more critically about the photos they take, and to look more closely and carefully at scenes they might previously have failed to notice.

The Instaphotobooth installation invites people in public spaces to take pictures of themselves (“#selfies”) in front of popular NYC landmarks such as the Empire State Building or the Flatiron Building. By uploading their photos to Instagram using a unique hashtag, people can contribute their images to an archival animation displayed inside the booth. Completed installations and previous iterations of this project are available for viewing at http://instaphotobooth.me/.
