MoMA Smartphone App

Research Methods with Alex Wright

{title} Students developed a set of prototype smartphone apps for the Museum of Modern Art, based on a field study of museum visitors. After synthesizing their research findings and developing a set of personas, the students began prototyping and testing their product concepts. Finally, they presented their concepts to a panel of representatives from the Museum of Modern Art. These presentations reflect the research and design methods used throughout the process.
  • Benjamin Gadbaw, Adjoa Opoku, Tina Ye : MoMA mashups

    MoMA mashups

MoMA Mashups tries to organize art in a way that makes sense to the user. By taking a three question survey, the app can quickly determine preferences and interests—and suggest a list of things you should see on your visit, a Mashup. You can also make your own Mashup by using our tag filtering system. You can quickly find works on a subject as broad as love or as specific as Picasso. Using your Mashup you can spend more time seeing art and discovering things you may have otherwise passed by, enhancing your entire art appreciation and MoMA experience.

  • David Bellona, Erin Moore, JoJo Glick, Katy Newton : MOMA MATE

    MOMA MATE

This group’s core concept was to utilize the visitors’ urge to document their museum experience by taking photos—and allow them to create a custom keepsake. Rather than a prescriptive application, the group wanted to design a simple, all-in-one tool that allows visitors to document and publish their museum experience in different ways. With the caveat of single use, visitors can take photos, customize them with basic editing tools, add text, and organize content into simple page templates. Finally, they can order a hardbound book from MoMA’s Design Store or create a pdf to share from their iPhone.

  • Kristin Breivik, Sarah Koo, Carrie Stiens, Catherine Young : MoMENT

    MoMENT

The MoMENT app allows you to easily remember and share your museum experience. Sensors will locate which artwork you are closest to, and automatically display information about it through the Viewing now function. With the click of a button, you can add pieces of art to your own art list, and add a comment if you like. All visitor actions will be aggregated and visualized in the Our MoMA view to make each visitor feel like they’re part of a larger whole, and give them a sense of community.

  • Christopher Cannon, Allison Shaw, Cooper Smith, Michael Yap : myMoMA

    myMoMA

Developing myMoMA was an exercise in simplicity for this group. As a response to apps with a myriad of features and functions, they kept paring down its tasks to meet myMoMA’s primary goal of allowing users to engage with the museum’s collection in an immersive, non-intrusive way. By using headphones and clicking on the remote, you can pocket your phone away and focus on the artwork instead of your screen.
