Meet the 19 students who will make up the Class of 2018. Over the next few weeks, we’ll highlight three incoming students at a time. Today: Ashley (Soohyun) Jang, Azucena Roma, and Christine Lawton.
Born and raised in Seoul, Ashley received a BFA in graphic design from Rhode Island School of Design. After graduation, she worked as a visual designer in a television-related research and development team at Samsung, where she worked to help users easily understand by creating an attractive user interface design. Working on such projects, she began to take interest in the work of the interaction designer.
At SVA, Ashley is excited to create interactive products and services and creatively approach social issues. She wishes to find various solutions for diverse people with useful perspective and knowledge.
Azucena Romá is a Guatemalan-American designer and visual artist that calls New Orleans home.
After double majoring in sociology and communications from the University of New Orleans, Azu went on to study graphic design at Loyola University New Orleans. Searching for a way to blend her interests in art, design, and social behavior, Azu was drawn to the field of interaction design. She enjoys thinking about the relationship between design and users in social and cultural contexts and imagining design's capabilities to impact social issues and contribute to communities, locally and globally.
Prior to joining SVA's IxD program, Azu divided her time between freelance clients, teaching design as an adjunct faculty member at Loyola New Orleans and creating art installations. Her art practice focuses on questions of personal identity and transient moments of change and discovery through reinterpreting traditional Guatemalan folk art with influences of design, lettering, and street art.
Azu has served on the board for AIGA New Orleans and exhibited at SCOPE Art Fair. In her free time she can be found listening to podcasts, yelling who dat during football season and spoiling her emo pet hedgehog Huevo.
Christine was born and raised in New Jersey and started designing websites when she was in middle school, playing Neopets. She continued to design and create in her free time, and went on to attend undergraduate school at Champlain College in Burlington, Vermont. Christine graduated summa cum laude in 2014 with a BFA in Graphic Design and continues to have fun designing.
In addition to design, Christine has always had a love for school and learning. She is excited to see where the field of design is going and to explore new technologies, but also knows that sometimes, the best solution is the simplest one.
