1. Tell us about yourself!

Trained as an Interior Designer with a user-centered design outlook, I took the opportunity and became a self-taught UX Designer. As a UX designer with industry experience, prior to joining the MFA Interaction Design program, I knew I wanted to fuse my interest for designing physical spaces with digital interactions. I aim to tackle real world problems with these diverse skill sets.

2. What class are you enjoying the most so far and why?

The classes I enjoy most so far are physical computing and coding, it is far more technical and not something I would have learned working in the industry. It also helps me see the potential in designing interactions - not just in digital products, but in the physical world.

3. What is your favorite part of NYC since moving here?

My favorite part of NYC is the diversity in the community here. It brings the best of food and culture from every corner of the world which is hard to find in any other city in the US.

4. Current favorite album?

My current favorite album is still an all time favorite called Love Me / Love Me Not by HONNE.

1. Tell us about yourself

I’m Osama Hussain, and just like many UX designers, I do not come from a design background. I did my undergraduate in business administration and worked in investment banking and advertising before working as a designer in tech. I went to the University of the Arts, London, to study design for visual communication where I found my passion for interaction design.

After graduation, I worked as a design lead at a logistics start-up. I’ve come to SVA to unlearn my process and relearn design from the lens of a problem solver. Through reframing global problems, I believe we have the ability to design accessible, just, and human-centric solutions.

2. What class are you enjoying the most and why?

So far, "Strategic Innovation in Product/Service Design" has challenged me the most. Coming from a business background, I am surprised how design is impacted by societal, economic, scientific, and technological factors. Also, you get to work with some of the most impactful design teams in New York City and get a taste of how it feels to solve some of the most pressing design challenges.

3. What is your favorite part of NYC since moving here?

This is going to sound very design-nerdy, but I am loving the art and posters in the subway and trains. I think it’s very creative and playful and every poster doesn’t look the same.

4. Current favorite album?

I’m listening to the Spotify Singles: Hits quite a lot these days. It’s got some of my favorite songs and they are enjoyable to listen to.

1.    Tell us about yourself

I am Jane, a UX designer passionate in exploring design systems, productivity workflows, and collaboration between design and development. Besides product design, I like to challenge myself with learning new skills, whether it is a new language or ability to ski. I am here to take on challenges.

I believe life is not linear, but instead, organic. We create our lives as we explore our talents and values together with the circumstances they helped create for us. I use this quote as my guidance to stay true to myself. Outside of class, I am the proud owner of a small paper stationery brand ‘Minimalmart’.

2.    What class are you enjoying the most so far and why?

I love Roger Mader and Criswell Lappin's "Strategic Innovation in Product/Service Design class." I like the intersection of business and design. During the class, we have a chance to work with some very well-known companies from consulting, health care and the financial industry. Those sponsors allow us to work on real life business problems and basically gain some working experience and perspective on how those big institutions employ design frameworks to address the needs of their clients. I am personally working on a fintech project which helps me gain sufficient working experience and enhance my capabilities for when I enter the market again.

3.    What is your favorite part of NYC since moving here?

Oh, Brooklyn! Small vintage stores and great coffee is what I love in Brooklyn.

4.    Current favorite album?

My all time favorite would be ‘Let it be’ by The Beatles
