Whether you’re an incoming student joining the Interaction Design program from near or far, there’s a lot of moving parts to getting started in a new program — and perhaps a new city or even a new country! To quell your pre-semester jitters, we want to give you clear and concise answers to our top three most frequently asked questions from new students.
First, we have the obvious question with the not-so-obvious answer.
1.) HOW DO I REGISTER FOR CLASSES?
Short answer is: you don’t have to.
How does it work then? To put it simply, before each academic year, the MFA Interaction Design Graduate Advisor registers all students. This is because our program has a set curriculum, and any electives are registered for in the fall once you arrive.
Since registration is taken care of, students don’t have to worry about working out their schedules and classes. Instead, students can focus on enjoying their summer and preparing other aspects of their transition.

Next up, we have the classic question for those of you wondering where the ~*~magic~*~ happens.
2.) WHERE ARE CLASSES HELD?
All of our classes are held at 136 West 21st Street, New York, NY 10001.
Classes are primarily held in our third floor studio, but students will also have a couple of classes in SVA’s Visible Futures Lab.
We are in a dynamic area between 6th and 7th Avenue and can be reached via a variety of subway and bus lines. There are lots of shops and restaurants nearby and, for those inclined to sightsee, we are also only a short walk away from the famous Flatiron Building and Madison Square Park.
Ideally, you won’t have too tough a time finding us and your new home away from home. We even have a big blue SVA NYC flag out front to welcome you, so you can’t miss us.
Last but not least, we have a question from those of you with boundless ambition and curiosity.
3.) ARE THERE ELECTIVES?
For graduate programs at SVA, the curriculum is set. For those interested in expanding their knowledge and skills in unique areas beyond the set curriculum, graduate students may audit one Continuing Education course per semester (including summer), provided there is space remaining and any prerequisites are met. Some classes, however, require permission from the Chair or staff of the desired program. These classes are covered by your tuition and are therefore no additional charge.
