Stamen Design was named the most innovative company in design. Shawn Allen, Stamen’s partner and design director, teaches Data Visualization in the Summer Intensive in Interaction Design.

BERG, whose principals Matt Jones and Jack Schulze taught a week-long workshop last week, was honored for “tackling design challenges… as if they were science experiments.”

Hoefler & Frere-Jones was tapped for “creating brilliant typefaces used in everything from presidential campaigns to stock tables,” something students learned firsthand from guest lecturer Jonathan Hoefler in 2009.

Principal Jake Barton of Local Projects reacted to being honored as the number two design firm by noting: “While it’s telling that most of their top design firms are technology firms, I think they selected us because we represent a firm that brings emotional human storytelling to cutting edge technology.” Jake, along with director of interaction design Ian Curry co-teaches the Public Interfaces course.

Known for their artful visualizations of data, Stamen Design was crowned first in this year’s list, and we can’t wait for more data visualization with Shawn Allen this summer.

Congratulations all!
