The Responsive Lightbox integrates light therapy into peoples busy lives.

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is estimated to affect 10 million Americans. Many people find that light therapy is a good alternative treatment to anti-depressants, because it makes up for lost sunlight exposure and resets the body’s internal clock without the side effects of prescription drugs. However, this kind of treatment requires daily time commitment and consistency.

The Responsive Lightbox prototype is designed to help people integrate light therapy more seamlessly into their lives. It works with the FitBit API to automatically time sessions based on someone’s current activity and sleep levels. While typical lightboxes are obtrusive and conspicuous, this one aims to be an aesthetically pleasing desk-side companion for someone who works at an office day-to-day. It shines full-spectrum white light during the day, and orange light at night to promote the production of natural melatonin, which helps people sleep better.
