Preventing Sexual Crime

The model shows how our society deals with rapes and how victimization is empowering the rapist. Society seems to be teaching “don’t get raped” instead of “don’t rape”, which makes the rape problem hard to deal with. The focus needs to be shifted towards WHY people rape and HOW we can change that. Conversations should take place on a level where issues are addressed by looking at the causes and not the perpetrator or action itself.

Current preventatives are often directed towards the action itself and operating on a level that requires a great amount of resources and still might not have a permanent impact on the situation. To change what is causing the action, the problem needs to be addressed at a higher level. As human beings we act based on goals when it comes to both day-to-day actions or long term achievements. We define our goals based on the belief systems we are associated with. This is the level where the intervention needs to take place in order to ensure a long term effect.
