- How do I apply to the MFA Interaction Design program?
Here's a step-by-step guide to applying to the MFA Interaction Design Program.
- What is the deadline for applying?
The priority deadline to apply for Fall 2025 is January 15, 2025.
- Can I apply to the program after the January 15th priority deadline?
YES! We accept applications as spots in the program remain available. We encourage potential students to contact the program directly if planning to apply after the January 15th deadline to inquire about remaining seats.
- Who is the ideal candidate for the Interaction Design program?
The MFA Interaction Design department seeks bold thinkers, makers, entrepreneurs, and passionate changemakers from all disciplines who are excited to shape the future of design and technology. We are looking for candidates keen on shaking up the status quo and applying design to make products, services, and experiences more inclusive, sustainable, and joyful.
We encourage applications from candidates of all academic and professional experiences at any stage of their professional journey. Our students join our program with backgrounds in graphic design, gaming, psychology, education, nursing, accounting, engineering, marketing, project management, and many other design and non-design fields. A bachelor's degree in any discipline is required.
- What should be included in my portfolio?
You are required to submit a portfolio of work that demonstrates a point of view about interaction design. Interaction design portfolios are likely visual but need not be, as we look for a broad range of references as parallel influences to the field. We recommend you include five or more projects. These projects can be a range of work from design to coding to writing to filmmaking to music.
- Do I need an undergraduate degree to apply?
Yes. It is a New York State requirement that all students pursuing graduate study submit a copy of their undergraduate transcript with proof of their undergraduate degree to the institution where they will begin their studies. This documentation is required prior to the start of the fall semester. SVA cannot permit a student to attend classes until this documentation is on file.
- What are my options for financial aid?
The SVA Office of Financial Aid coordinates the many sources of aid to meet as much of the student's financial needs as funding permits. Contact the office directly for more information at 212.592.2030.
All students who apply are considered for merit based-scholarships from the ixD department.
